Nerdy Stuff, Pop Culture

Oh my! Meeting George Takei at Comicpalooza 2015

It’s the day after Memorial Day, which means another Comicpalooza (Houston’s largest comic convention) has come and gone.  This year’s convention was packed with nerdy goodness as always. I love that Comicpalooza continues to grow and bring in more and more exciting guests, vendors, cosplayers, and fans.

(Sidenote: If you’re interested in checking out the con next year, I suggest reading Jason’s blog post on How to Prepare for a Comic Book Convention.)

This year, one of my highlights of the convention was meeting the amazing George Takei!

Our time together during our photo op was very brief. I shook his hand and told him something like “It’s so nice to meet you. You are such an inspiration.” He turned to my sister and said “You’re wearing red – you know what that means.” Because who doesn’t love a little red shirt humor?

I am so inspired by George Takei’s activism in racial and LGBT equality.  Hearing him speak in his Q&A was emotional and encouraging. Several of the fans who came up to the mic to ask a question specifically told George how his openness about his life encouraged them to come out themselves. Cue the feelings.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from George Takei at Comicpalooza 2015:

“Star Trek was about diversity” – George Takei
