You may have seen our Star Trek-themed announcement on Facebook… We’re engaged!
My FIANCÉ (doesn’t that just feel good?) popped the question just over 2 weeks ago (2 weeks that have been a bit crazy, by the way). He proposed at the Houston Zoo, and then surprised me with a day of visiting our favorite places in Houston. It was absolutely perfect – not to mention a total surprise, as we were 10 days out from a trip to Vegas, which I was trying hard (and probably failing miserably) not to set too many expectations for.
Below is the list of places we went on our engagement day adventure. I want to thank them all for (although unknowingly) being a very special part of our very special day!
The Houston Zoo
We both love animals. We have been going to the Houston Zoo together since we first moved to Houston in 2009. We have been on again-off again members and always huge fans. One of my favorite things is to go to the zoo on a sunny but chilly day. If it’s even a little cold you’ll pretty much have the zoo to yourself because people don’t want to chance the weather. So that’s exactly what we did that day!
Friends for Life Animal Shelter
Friends for Life is a no kill animal shelter in the Heights that does really fantastic things for Houston animals and animal owners. I volunteered there (at their old location on 19th street) for a little while back in 2011. They are a fantastic organization run by some really great people. We went to their awesome new shelter and played with kittens! I seriously can’t give these guys enough love. >^..^<
Dave & Busters
Who doesn’t love cocktailing and video games? We particularly enjoy the multi-player Super Trivia game and the relatively new Mario Kart Arcade Grand Prix Deluxe. And we love laughing at the fact that the Lost World game has been in every arcade ever since the movie came out in 1997 (SEVENTEEN years ago). Fun fact: we got our food processor from Dave & Busters ticket winnings after a particularly fruitful day of trivia last year.
Bedrock City Comics
I sort of snuck this one in. We had some time to kill before dinner so I suggested we run by Bedrock City Comics (“our store” is the Washington location). After all, if this day was all about our favorite places in Houston – how could I leave this one out? The staff at Bedrock are always so nice and helpful, and it is always well stocked with comics and toys and books and posters and more wonderful things that I somehow can’t live without. It’s definitely one of our favorite places in town.
Kung Fu Saloon
That’s right, we hit TWO bar + arcade establishments. Kung Fu Saloon features old school games, which meant gin and tonic and Centipede for me. Not to mention that the food is fantastic – think classic bar fare with an Asian twist. I love, love, love Kung Fu. If you’ve never been, go on Sunday for free play, $1 mimosas, and cheap/free parking on Washington. Or go on Saturday afternoon after you just got engaged. Either way, this place is awesome.
The last stop on our tour was Zoe’s Kitchen on Washington. I absolutely love Zoe’s food, and they make it really easy to order ahead and pick up a full meal. We took dinner back to the house to drink champagne with the cats! We also watched the movie we watched on our first date.
My engagement day was wonderful. I don’t remember exactly what he said to me (something about how he loves me a lot and six years together feels like forever), but I will always remember having a blast. And the best part is that now we get to make this thing official and THEN celebrate with all of our family and friends. How great is that?
