Documentaries inside my XBOX

February 18th, 2009

Jason did what every responsible adult would do with their first paycheck… he bought an XBOX. Consequently, a new chapter of my life has begun. And that chapter is life with NetFlix. While the convenient queuing and subsequent one day shipping of movies (Blurays for only $1 more a month) is great and all, it’s the instant playback on my… err.. our XBOX that I enjoy the most.

Here’s how it works: I log onto Netflix and search for movies/tv shows. I find one I like. I can either add it to my queue to be mailed to me in physical form whenever I send back the zombie flick I am currently watching, or for many of these movies I have the option to “Play Instantly.” That’s right, instant gratification. Click… wait about 10 seconds… and the movie is on the XBOX, a-ready for watching. Fantastic.

The really exciting part? I can queue up as many of these instant plays as I want. Up to infinity.

The best part? I can add an entire season of a show (currently watching 30 Rock Season 1) and I get all of the episodes in one list… not in multiple DVDs. Renting TV shows from NetFlix is annoying because each season is made up of multiple discs that take up the bulk of your queue.

Ok. Enough. I think it’s fantastic and completely worth buying an XBOX only for this purpose (my future as a Halo champion is cloudy at best)… but that’s my humble opinion. Even if you don’t have a magical box that brings you free streaming movies, you can check out my reviews of the latest movies I’ve been watching. They’re all documentaries and they’re all extremely interesting. So, NetFlix or not, check them out.

Flick: Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price

Website: walmartmovie.com

Verdict: Interesting, but not wholly convincing

Review: I’m all for hating Walmart as much as the next White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, but this documentary is extremely one sided. For the most part it seemed that Walmart is simply taking advantage of lax government regulations and it is the lawmakers these people should be going after and not the coportation… but I digress. A few years ago I watched the PBS documentary “Is Walmart good for America?” and I remember that piece being a lot more balanced, showing both sides of the issues. You can watch the full program on PBS’s website here.

Flick: Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room

Website: enronmovie.com

Verdict: Fascinating and entertaining.

Review: This movie tells the story of Enron in an interesting and witty way. I had no idea the full extent of what was going on in the organization. It’s a really interesting case study on un/ethical behavior, especially for this new Houston-ite.

Flick: Religulous

Website: lionsgate.com/religulous

Verdict: Hilarious and thought provoking, very weird/ unconvincing conclusion at the end.

Review: This movie made me laugh and made me think and I genuinely enjoyed it… until the last 5 minutes when Bill jumps from this steadily rolling argument to *BAM* conclusion: RELIGION is SCARY and DEADLY for the WORLD. Weird. But definitely worth watching.
